DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY - UNIVERSITY OF KARACHI

DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY - UNIVERSITY OF KARACHI

According to an ancient Chinese verse,

“If you want to secure yourself for a whole year then cultivate a crop, if you want to plan for 10 years then grow a tree & if you want to make a 100 years plan then formulate the varsities for your youth___”.
Believe it or not, China & Japan are the torch bearers of innovations as well as paragons of dew of rejuvenation in the field of sciences & technologies, especially in this era of industrial & economic antagonism. They fully focused & give emphasis to the importance of applied sciences. As we know that applied sciences are the brass-tacks of discoveries & inventions in our modern epoch.

University of Karachi is one of the well known universities of Pakistan and providentially bounded in the gratitude of providing skilled and brilliant Appliedians to a variety of National & Multinational industries.

Being a student of BS Applied chemistry & chemical technology, I would like to be grateful for the incredibly encouraging & constructive approach of my department regarding the efforts of course assortment, credit hours of theory & practical work, highly qualified & well experienced teaching staff, curricular & co-curricular activities like study tours, visits, seminars & officials picnics.

Applied chemistry is the back bone of various industries; one can know the objective of Applied Chemistry as,

“The application of the theories and principles of chemistry to practical purposes”.

Also you can define it as.. “Applied Chemistry is the brass tack of engineering that deals with the technology of large-scale chemical production and the manufacture of products through chemical processes.”
OR
“The branch of engineering concerned with the design, operation, maintenance, and manufacture of the plant and machinery used in industrial chemical processes”
Hence, the aim of my department is to train a batch of such skilled and industrial alumnae who know the study of production from the origin of raw materials to the finished product ready to distribute in market, simultaneously with all transitional studies of kinetics, thermodynamics and engineering accompanied to the Chemical backgrounds. It will be revealing to you that the course designed for the degree of BS in Applied chemistry doesn’t merely give a probe of industrial processes; it includes the origin & back ground of raw materials used for the subsequent processing, such as Mineralogy, Materialogy & Metallurgy from ore enrichment to Steel Mills, Textile sector from field & crop to dyed, printed & finished fabric. Synthetics from preparation of polymers & resins to a complete product, Medicine & Pharmaceutical goods from their origin sources to the ultimate & decisive use of consumer.

In a nut shell, the mode of studies includes all progressions & steps of obtaining raw material from the specific sources, handling, storage and dispensation, industrial operations, manufacturing schematics, production, finishing, packaging, services and all further steps from quality control to marketing and management, and so the graduate of Applied Chemistry department knows the complete life cycle of industrially manufactured products.

Department of applied chemistry is offering 44 subjects for the 4 years BS degree program. These courses do not only include all chemical & related heavy industries but they also comprise the studies related to management, industrial economics, marketing business & communication skills. Luckily being a student of Applied Chemistry Department, UoK, I can say, My Department is committed to providing the chief quality of educational experience through excellent teaching of industrially relevant courses in an environment where student needs are a top priority. For this intention our course includes computer science subjects as well, according to the demands of modern chemical industry requirements, similarly our material workshop, unit operation & fluid mechanics labs are designed with all technical aspects, all other labs are also well equipped with respect to small scale or laboratory scale production, which is more than enough to prepare a brilliant analyst & Applied Chemist.

Our courses emphasize the commercial as well as industrial application of chemistry. They aim to expand your fundamental chemical knowledge, refine your professional, scientific and technical skills and to develop your personal, communication and management skills.

Ultimately you will be equipped for a successful career in chemistry, the chemical industries or a vast range of alternative scientific, business and professional occupations such as teaching.

My department has over 39 years experience of teaching Industrial chemical operations, unit processes, reactor engineering & plant design as it was established in 1971. Correspondingly the most substantial and superb thing is the affiliation of two sound equipped research centers LEJ & HEJ with my department for both undergraduate & higher education researchers & analysts.

Our courses provide a fundamental & elementary understanding of the physical, chemical, kinetic, thermodynamic and biological principles underlying modern industrial processes. This is coupled with practical, environmental and business awareness. Owing to which our pass out seniors are highly sought after by top companies for industrial placements and on graduation. Many of our graduates go on to take up responsible and leading positions in industry.

It is pertinent to mention the industries which are incorporated in the curriculum of BS Applied Chemistry, our curriculum includes a variety of chemical industries such as Medicine & Pharmaceutics, Edible oil & Ghee, Soap & Detergents, Paint & Distempers, Dyes & Pigments, Petrochemicals, Ointments & Waxes, Food science & Flavors, Plastic & Rubber, Glass & Ceramic, Paper & Pulp, Textile & Polymer, Metallurgy, Mineralogy, Materialogy & Ore Enrichment, Petroleum & Gas; Nuclear reactors, Cement, Sugar, Photography, Fertilizers, Leather & Ragzine, Cosmetics & Perfumes, Explosives & Arms, Pesticides, Sprays & Insecticides etc. are some random industries which are divided into some major groups of industries & these major groups of industries such as Inorganic, Petroleum, Polymer, Textile, Metallurgy, Food science etc. are hand out as “Specialization Courses”.

Applied chemistry in essence, the education of industrial chemistry & the study of industrial innovation, an Applied Chemist is a chemist, engineer, technologist & expert of his field in all aspects of 360 degrees. As mentioned earlier that the main aim of Applied Chemistry Department is to provide skilled professionals to the Chemical & correlated heavy material Industries so as to improve the quality of living of earthlings to serve humanity.

For this purpose the student of BS applied chemistry appears in more than 30 exams in a semester by means of Quiz, Midterms, Viva & Performance exams, Terminal theory exams, Presentations, Assignments and Projects etc. This schematic is more than enough to prepare a competent graduate. Sometimes it seems a burden but infact after going through this 4 years period our senior graduates of applied chemistry are successfully performing their jobs with passion & devotion at key positions in various industries.

Applied Chemistry remains crucial profession today as we shape the world of the 21st century. Chemistry is essential to the modern society we live in. The chemicals, from which all manner of consumer products are manufactured, are produced in processes developed from the fundamental principles of chemistry.

Applied Chemists provide a key to the process development of consumer products, industrial materials, medicines and foodstuffs. A good research or process chemist needs a sound understanding of physical chemistry principles, unit operation, unit processes, fluid mechanics, kinetics, plant design, reactor engineering, strong communication and teamwork skills, an understanding of environmental concerns, and a grasp of the fundamental principles of economics and management to keep pace with the ever-changing demands of society. Fortunately the Department of Applied Chemistry, UoK, has been serving on these bases for last four decades under the supervision of devoted, committed, highly qualified & experienced governess to overcome the thwartenings in the field of R&D as well as to fulfill the demands of current spirited industrial atmosphere.

Remember that…Our courses differ from the conventional "pure" chemistry pattern as it benefits from the additional expertise which became available with the formation of the division of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, whilst still covering the essential "core" of chemical knowledge required by all professional chemists. Countless consumer and industrial products, medicines and pharmaceuticals are produced on processes developed from the fundamental principles of chemistry.

The products in the world we use everyday require the skills of an Applied Chemist. You will be trained to ensure the safe and profitable production of the chemicals and materials required to create products such as clothing, medicine, food & other edible commodities, Petroleum, agriculture related products such as pesticides, sprays, insecticides, fertilizers, some other luxury goods and home entertainment systems.

Applied Chemists are very much at the forefront of working to improve the quality of our lives. Consequently Industrial Chemistry is a challenging and fascinating profession with extensive career opportunities. As an Appliedian you will combine a detailed knowledge of chemistry with an understanding of engineering principles in order to design, construct and operate chemical process plants. In addition to the traditional oil and chemical-based industries you will be well equipped to go into a wide range of careers including food production, pollution control, environmental protection, energy conservation, waste recovery and recycling, medical science, water treatment plants, health and safety, alternative energy sources, resource conservation, research & development, management and consultancy.

My department is playing a vital role in this respect, being a student of Applied Chemistry; I would like to request Govt. of Pakistan to lay emphasis on the implication of applied sciences, especially Applied Chemistry. Govt should fix an adequate annual budget for the departments of Applied sciences of all universities as we Appliedians are the future of our nation, Today’s speculation will bear fruit tomorrow as the 1st world has the slogan “Spend more & more so as to earn more & more”. So provision of sufficient funds must be reviewed and ensured by the Government to overcome the crises and deficiencies in the sector of research & development from the very derivation level. Brain drain is the root cause of industrial retreat and unfortunately Pakistan has been experiencing the curse of Brain Drain since independence owing to be deficient in strategies to accommodate the genius, patriotic and nationalistic workforce, Now there’s a dire need to triumph over this lacking to be a competent participator of the track of Industrial challenges…… Thanks.

  2. Hi.. but I have heard that students at department of chemistry at uok are usually failed deliberately by department heads just so that they can form a ratio of pass to fail which shows how tough this subject is to pass and how professors at this department are adamant about creating that so called "hyped"image of this depart. Allah ko mano bache khud kushi kar rahe hain depression ki wajah se q k teachers promote nahi kar rahe ... itne salon se bache dhake kha rahe hain is depart mai...PLEASE STOP THIS CHUTIYAPA
